Found by Google. Found by AI.

How people find a local business is changing, and it is changing quickly. For twenty years the job was simple to describe: rank on Google. That still matters. But a growing share of people now skip the list of blue links entirely and ask an AI assistant for a direct recommendation - "who is the best plumber near me?", "recommend a good dentist in my town", "which local garage can fit me in this week?" - and act on the answer they are given. Roughly a third of people in major markets are projected to use generative AI search in 2026, and Europe is on the same path. If your website cannot be read by those systems, you are simply not in the answer, no matter how good your business is.

The CMS Pros Platform is built so that both audiences - traditional search engines and AI assistants - can read, understand and recommend your business by default. This page explains how modern search actually works, the technical trap that hides a lot of otherwise good websites, and what the platform does about it.

Two audiences, one requirement

Googles crawler and an AI assistants crawler are different in many ways, but they want the same core thing: a page whose meaning is clear from the actual HTML. They both reward content that is well-structured, honestly labelled, and easy to parse. They both struggle with pages where the important information is buried, hidden behind scripts, or implied by design rather than stated in text. Getting the fundamentals right for one increasingly means getting them right for the other. The era where you optimised separately for search and for everything else is ending; the winning approach is a clean, readable, well-described page that serves both.

What AI assistants need to recommend you

When an AI assistant answers "recommend a good [trade] in [town]", it is drawing on pages it can read and trust. To be one of them, your site needs a few things that have nothing to do with clever copywriting and everything to do with structure:

  • Real HTML content. The words on the page have to be in the page source, not painted on afterwards by a script (more on this below).
  • Structured data. A machine-readable description of your business - its name, type, address, phone, hours, services and prices - so an assistant knows facts about you rather than guessing from prose.
  • Clear entities. An unambiguous sense of who you are, where you operate, and what you offer, stated plainly and consistently across the site.
  • Answer-shaped content. Sections that directly answer the questions people ask, so a paragraph of yours can become part of an answer.

The CMS Pros Platform produces all of this for you. You write your services, prices, hours and location once, in plain language, and the platform expresses them in the structured, machine-readable form both Google and AI crawlers look for. You do not need to know what a schema is; you need a platform that writes one correctly.

The JavaScript problem that hides builder sites

This is the single most important technical point on this page, because it catches so many modern websites and almost nobody explains it to the business owner.

The major AI crawlers - GPTBot behind ChatGPT, ClaudeBot behind Claude, PerplexityBot behind Perplexity - mostly fetch the raw HTML of a page and do not run JavaScript. Many drag-and-drop website builders, on the other hand, assemble their pages with JavaScript in the visitors browser: the initial HTML is close to empty, and the content appears only after the browser runs a script. To a human with a modern browser, the page looks perfect. To an AI crawler that does not run the script, the page can arrive nearly blank - a shell with almost no readable content.

The result is a website that can rank in Google (whose main crawler does render JavaScript, though not always promptly) while being effectively invisible to the AI assistants your customers are increasingly asking. It is a blind spot precisely where the growth is. And because the site looks fine to the owner, the problem goes unnoticed until sales from that channel simply never appear.

How to test your own site right now

You can check this yourself in about a minute, on any website including your own:

  • Open the page in your browser.
  • Look at the page source (right-click and choose "View Page Source", or add "view-source:" before the address) - this is the raw HTML before any script runs, which is what an AI crawler sees.
  • Use your browsers find function to search that source for a sentence you can clearly see on the page - a headline, a service, your phone number.
  • If you find your text in the source, an AI crawler can probably read it. If the source is mostly empty and your content is missing, the page is being rendered by JavaScript and may be invisible to AI assistants.

Our companion guide, Is your website invisible to AI?, walks through the same test with screenshots and explains what to do if your site fails it.

What the platform does for you

Every CMS Pros Platform page is server-rendered: the full HTML, with your real content in it, is delivered by the server before any script runs. On top of that foundation the platform adds, automatically, the things that make a page readable and recommendable:

  • Structured data describing your business and each page, generated from what you type - no code, no plugin.
  • Titles and descriptions for every page, with a live preview of how the page will look in search results, so you are never guessing.
  • An automatic sitemap and clean, human-readable web addresses.
  • Fast-loading pages, because speed is part of how both search engines and assistants judge quality.
  • A structure that is friendly to the newer conventions AI systems use to discover and understand a site.

In short: being findable is the default state of a CMS Pros Platform site, not a separate project you have to commission after the fact.

Platform by default, service when you want more

Getting the fundamentals right automatically is one thing; actively competing for visibility is another. The platform gives you the first for free. When you want the second - tracking how you appear in AI answers, sharpening your content around the questions customers actually ask, watching what competitors are doing, and improving month over month - that is what our AI Search Optimisation service is for. The relationship is simple: the platform is correct by default, and the service pushes it further. On the platform, much of what that service used to spend its first weeks fixing is already done.

A note on honesty

We will not promise you page one of Google or a guaranteed spot in any AI answer - nobody credible can, because those results depend on your market, your competitors and factors no provider controls. What we promise is concrete and within our control: your site will be correctly structured, server-rendered, and described in the way search engines and AI systems need in order to read and recommend you. We make you readable and recommendable. What you do with that visibility is where your business takes over.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to understand any of this? No. You write plain content; the platform handles the structure and the technical readiness.

Will you guarantee I rank first? No honest provider can. We guarantee correct, automatic optimisation and readability by search and AI systems.

My current site ranks on Google - is that enough? Not necessarily. Ranking on Google and being readable by AI assistants are different tests; the JavaScript problem above is exactly how a site can pass one and fail the other.

What is the difference between the platform and the AI service? The platform makes you correct by default; the service actively optimises and monitors over time.

Structured data, in plain language

"Structured data" sounds technical, but the idea is simple. A normal paragraph tells a human "we are open until six on Saturdays" - and a human understands it perfectly. A machine reading prose has to guess. Structured data is a second, hidden layer on the page that states the same facts in a fixed, labelled format: this is the business name, this is the address, these are the opening hours, this is a service and its price. Search engines and AI assistants read that layer directly, with no guessing, which is why a business with good structured data turns up correctly in answers about hours, location and services while a business without it gets misrepresented or skipped.

The catch is that writing structured data by hand is fiddly and easy to get wrong, and on most platforms it is a plugin you have to install and configure. The CMS Pros Platform generates it from what you already type. You fill in your hours in the ordinary way; the platform produces the machine-readable version behind the scenes. You get the benefit of expert-level structured data without knowing it exists.

The "near me" moment

Most local buying decisions now start with a "near me" or "in [town]" question, and increasingly that question is put to an AI assistant rather than a search box. The assistant does not return ten links; it returns a short answer naming a few businesses. Being one of the named businesses is worth far more than being tenth on a list, and it depends almost entirely on whether the assistant can read and trust your site - your location, your services, your hours, stated clearly and confirmed by structured data. A business that is invisible to the assistant is not competing for that moment at all. The platforms job is to make sure you are legible to whoever is doing the recommending, so that when the "near me" question is about your trade in your town, you can be part of the answer.

What you can check this month

Whether or not you move to us, there are a few things worth checking on your current site, because they are the difference between being findable and being overlooked:

  • Run the view-source test above on your three most important pages. If your content is not in the source, that is the first thing to fix.
  • Confirm your business name, address and phone number appear identically across your site, so machines see one consistent business rather than three slightly different ones.
  • Check that your opening hours and core services are written in plain text on the page, not only inside an image or a booking widget a crawler cannot read.
  • Make sure every important page has its own title and description rather than a generic one repeated site-wide.

On the CMS Pros Platform each of these is either automatic or a guided, one-time setup. On a hand-built or plugin-based site they are ongoing chores that are easy to let slide - which is exactly how findable businesses quietly become invisible ones.

Cited, not just ranked

There is a shift in what winning looks like. Traditional search rewarded being ranked - appearing high on a list a person then scrolls. AI search rewards being cited - being the business an assistant names in its answer, often with no list at all. The two overlap, but they are not the same, and a site tuned only for the old game can quietly lose the new one. Being citable comes down to being readable, trustworthy and clearly described - exactly the qualities the CMS Pros Platform builds in by default. You cannot control whether an assistant recommends you, any more than you can control Googles ranking, but you can make certain that nothing about your website stops it from doing so.
